Abstract

The apical buds of Saffron corm is in vegetative stage during December to March and from March and April it changes to prefloral stage and then by disappearance of the leaves it converts to an appearantly inactive form. The reactivation of these buds starts in October and results to the formation and opening of the flowers in November.
The culture of the vegetative buds in suitable synthetic media indicate that these buds spend all the stages of flower formation only within 2 months and in February will have a structure similar to what is found in nature in October.
Further—more when the corms segments are cultured in a suitable growth medium, it produces neoformated tissues and organs which consists of new cambiums and the tissues which result from it includes new corms, neoformated roots and a new organ which is rare in nature and its appearance is similar to the droppers found in Tulipa and Erythronium.
